Galileo wrote that “geometric shapes are the alphabet in which the book of nature is written.”
Geometry is nature’s language of relationship. It holds the key to how non-physical energy creates the manifest world through specific patterns of subtle energy.
These geometric codes, or universal laws of vibration contain the musical, mathematical and archetypal patterns that govern and influence our formative universe and create harmony and coherence.
What is Sound?
The universe is alive with sound and within all sounds are harmonics. Harmonics, also known as overtones are a phenomenon of sound that occurs whenever sound is created. Normally we perceive what seems like single tones when we hear a note struck on a musical instrument. However, nearly all tones that are produced by musical instruments, our voices or other sound sources are in reality not pure tones, but mixtures of pure tone frequencies called partials.
The lowest such frequency is called the fundamental and all partials higher in frequency than the fundamental are referred to as overtones or harmonics. Overtones are present in our voices and in fact, they are responsible for our own unique speaking and singing qualities, commonly referred to as a frequency signature.
Pythagoras (the 6th century Greek master of mathematics and harmonics) spoke of the Music of the Spheres. He taught that the movements of the heavenly bodies traveling through the universe created sounds. These sounds could be perceived by those who had been consciously trained to hear them.
Recently, scientists using advanced mathematical principles based on the orbital velocities of the planets have equated different sounds with different planets. Amazingly, they seem to be all harmonically interrelated. Anything that vibrates creates harmonics. Since the universe is composed of nothing but vibrations, everything creates fundamental tones and harmonics, ranging from electrons orbiting around atoms to planets orbiting around the sun.
“Pythagoras applied his law or harmonic intervals to all the phenomena of nature, demonstrating the harmonic relationship between the elements, the planets and the constellations.” — Power of Harmonics by Jonathan Goldman
Cymatics
The study of the resonance patterns of different sound frequencies, which is known as CYMATICS shows in detail the amazing power of sound and how it changes and shapes the structure of matter. The article Sound Insights by Jeff Volk explains in detail this universal principle. (You can also read more articles on Cymatics)
Every form of matter is an outer and lower reflection of the inherent geometric information which flows from a higher order. Hence it is not the matter itself that is responsible for its energy content but the geometry of the energy field that structures the matter.
Sacred Geometry and Wind Harp Design
Our intention in designing the Wind Harp is to create a structure that is not only sensitive enough to resonate with the geometry of nature but also resonate with the geometric structure of the listener. Towards this end one of the primary design models we use is the Vesica, which is incorporated into the Infiniti series of Wind Harps. We use what is considered a three dimensional Vesica which creates the form of the trinity or triune. We have found this simple geometry to not only be very aesthetically pleasing to the eye but also lends itself to a stringing configuration that allows for tuning the harp in resonance with a natural harmonic sequence.
The Vesica Pisces is formed by the intersection of two circles or spheres whose centers exactly touch. This symbolic intersection represents the “common ground”, or “shared vision” between equal but separate individuals. i.e. “The Truth is what the opposites share in common.”
The Vesica is the perfect balance between the yin and yang; it is the 3rd force that transcends duality. The shape of the human eye itself is a Vesica Pisces. The spiritual significance of “seeing eye-to-eye” into the “mirror of the soul” was highly regarded by numerous Renaissance artists who used this form extensively in art and architecture.
The ratio of the axes of the form is the square root of 3, which alludes to the deepest nature of the triune, this cannot be adequately expressed as a finite number. If the width of the Vesica is unity then the height is the square root of 3 = 1.7320508 ~ ∞ which is considered a transcendental number because it will never resolve itself.
The Platonic Solids
The 5 Platonic solids (tetrahedron, cube or hexahedron, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron) are primal models of crystal patterns that occur throughout the world of minerals in countless variations. To the Greeks, these solids symbolized fire, earth, air, spirit (or ether) and water respectively.
